Culinary School: The Pros and Cons of Culinary Education

I couldn't write it better myself. This article explains the paradox and frustration of working in the industry. There is no promise of decent money even after getting Associates Degree or completing a program. Investing thousands of dollars into education only to get an entry level position. Working alongside someone who didn't attend school but is somehow equally as qualified because they started 6 months earlier then you, so they have some"experience". For me, education is invaluable. Going to school and learning the history and science of what we do and why we do it.

Being mentored in the workplace can also be extremely valuable. However, anything and everything you learn will be filtered through the scope of that mentor. All of their biases and opinions will be taken for fact during learning and so it's difficult to separate those at face value. Higher education on the other hand, presents you with fact and allows you to create and develop your own opinions and thoughts with that information.
